Harvey C. King
June 30, 1927 – May 31, 2021
NASBP was saddened to learn of the passing on May 31, 2021 of Harvey C. King, 93, co-founder of NASBP Member King & Neel, Inc. of Honolulu, HI. Harvey and Ted Neel co-founded King & Neel in 1967. Under Harvey’s leadership, the agency grew to 50 employees and served hundreds of businesses in Hawaii and across the U.S.
NASBP Past President John Bustard of King & Neel, LLC said Harvey King was more than a top-quality insurance and bond professional. “As you will learn in this tribute to his life, there was much to admire,” Bustard said. “His countless achievements were possible due largely to a perpetual desire to make every minute count; he was truly an inspiration to others through his wisdom, teachings, and especially his friendship.”
Harvey grew up in Burbank, CA during the Great Depression. After graduating high school he joined the Marines and served during WWII. After his discharge, Harvey attended Stanford University on the GI Bill and graduated in 1952 with a BS in industrial engineering. While at Stanford he met his future wife, Mary. They were married in 1953. Harvey and Mary moved to Hawaii, a place he had been stationed during the war and vowed to return to to start a family. Their children included Sue, Doreen, and Don.
Harvey worked at the Hawaii Fire Insurance Rating Bureau and later held positions with Liberty Mutual and with the insurance department of Alexander & Baldwin. In 1967, Harvey and his friend, Ted Neel, became business partners and formed a successful insurance and surety bond brokerage, King & Neel Inc.
Harvey is survived by his wife, Mary (Hines) King; their children, Sue, Doreen Stevens (Pat), and Don (Julianne); their seven grandchildren; and their three great-grandchildren. The family held a private paddle-out Celebration of Life (a traditional Hawaiian tribute to the deceased’s life and legacy held in the ocean) and memorial service at Lanikai Beach on August 1, 2021.
