F. Jay Scribner
NASBP was saddened to learn of the passing on April 7, 2009 of F. Jay Scribner, 64, of Riegelsville, Pennsylvania. Jay was Vice President of Surety Operations of The Guarantee Company of North America USA (GCNA). Jay attended NASBP Regional and Annual meetings throughout his surety career that spanned over three decades.
Howard Cowan of Howard Cowan Bond Agency said that he met Jay the first day on the job and Jay had been a mentor to him since then. “Jay was always gracious and professional and never took business personally,” Cowan said. “Jay was the calmest, most unflappable person I’ve ever known,” he added.
Before entering his surety career, Jay was an analyst on Wall Street. In the early 1970s Jay went to work in the Dallas, Texas office of Safeco Insurance Company of America. From there he went to work at the home office of the American International Group (AIG). Then, in the late 1970s Jay went to work at Chubb’s home office as one of the chief underwriting officers. Later, he took over as head surety executive at Harleysville Insurance, which The Guarantee Company of North America later acquired. During his three and half years of employment with The Guarantee Company of North America USA, Jay was a key and integral part of the success and development of GCNA USA.
Jay is survived by his wife, Carroll, and two sons, Campbell and his wife Stephanie, of Madison, Wisconsin and Grant of Washington, D.C.; three daughters, Michele Hall and her husband Douglas, of Bradenton, Florida, Paige Roberts and her husband Todd of Bellevue, Nebraska and Claire Scribner of Philadelphia, Pa.; and six grandchildren.
